The Jole Rider Autumn Cotswold Sportive

On a lovely sunny Sunday morning, Team Some Cows, sponsored by PrestonSkirrow Limited, completed a charity bike ride in aid of Bikes4Africa.

The Bikes4Africa programme refurbishes donated second-hand bikes and delivers them from the UK to African schools, making the journey to education possible for thousands of children. They have delivered more than 13,000 bikes to schools in Africa. Having a bicycle makes a world of difference for these children, their families and also their communities.

The Sportive is a very well-run cycling event that we have taken part in for the last three years. The marshalling, feed stations and signage is all good and the hot food available afterwards was very welcome. There was a choice of five distances this year: 30 miles, 50 miles, 70 miles, 90 miles and 100 miles.

Half of Some Cows signed up for the 30-mile route (relatively flat and easy going for the casual rider) and the other half signed up for the 50-mile route (a mixture of flat and rolling hills for intermediate riders).  Can you guess which half raced off, got lost, followed the wrong route and still finished in front of the other half?

The event is centred on Westonbirt School, house and gardens, set in acres of stunning parkland with superb facilities for an event of this type. The Cotswolds is well known for its beautiful countryside, gentle wolds, with river valleys, water meadows, beech woods and sleepy limestone villages. A mix of flatlands, rolling hills and sharp escarpments makes this area very special for bike rides.

We had a great time and hope to be back again next year!
